It used to be that design trends were marked by their ubiquity — pink tile bathrooms in the 1950s, orange shag carpet in the 1970s, or the speckled granite countertops of the 2000s. Then Pantone decided to release the color of the year in 2000. Since then, dozens of companies have jumped on the bandwagon.
What’s the color of 2018? Depends on who you ask.
Pantone’s official color of 2018 is Ultra Violet, a bold purple like the cosmic dust in a nebula.
Sherwin Williams’ color of the year is a saturated blue called Oceanside.
PPG’s color of the year is Black Frame, a surprisingly dark choice.
Benjamin Moore picked a red called Caliente.
Behr is all in on a dusty blueish green-gray called In the Moment.
So, just like everything else in life, you’ll have to decide for yourself what the color of the year is. … And whether or not we can really have color trends dictated to us every year.
But while we’re on the subject, I noticed a cool infographic on Pantone’s website. I think it says a lot more about color trends than any company can. (Sorry it’s so small.)
